Riding from the Port of Newcastle – Friday, July 24

Mich, Mel and Paul enjoying peaches

Come explore some new paths with Mich and Mel. Their invitation is below.

The start of our ride will be in the Port of Newcastle, from the parking lot of Wilmot Conservation Area at the bottom of Toronto Street. However Toronto Street is under construction so you cannot take it from the 401. You have to go through the Port subdivision.

There are no facilities there but should be ample parking and room for chairs afterwards.

The ride will start with paths, then the new subdivision roads along the lake to another path, then paths north along Soper Creek and then more new paths. Finally we empty onto country roads with nice pavement and no hills. 48 kms in total, with shortcuts if you desire.

Maps will be provided at the start. Below is an image and if you’d like to print out your own advanced copy, just click on the image!

Riding from Wicklow Beach – Tuesday, July 21

Eden United Church – 1874 – Dundonald, Ontario

This Tuesday’s “after-ride picnic” will take place on Wicklow beach, preceded by a scenic 48 Km ride (start time 10:00) up to the village of Dundonald and back. Everyone should pass through Dundonald once in their life. A 34 Km route (but no Dundonald) is also available for those who may prefer a shorter ride.

Mr Ford is now allowing us to meet in groups of up to 50 (but following all social distancing rules)is . We will still limit riding groups to 10 for conventional safety reasons.

Keep in mind that the party is only open to club members and if this is your first ride of the season, make sure you’ve signed your COVID 19 Waiver and read the GFW response to COVID 19.

See you at the beach. Be sure to bring a comfy chair, a yummy lunch, a favorite beverage, bathing suit, towel and the desire to maybe climb a few hills.

Please comment if you are planning to join the fun.

Riding from Newtonville – Friday, July 17

Doug and Melissa! Nice shirt Doug.

Doug and Joanne are our hosts Friday for our ride starting at 5:30. If you have not joined a ride yet this season, please remember to print, sign and bring your COVID-19 Waiver and read the GFW response to COVID in the same document.

Doug and Joanne’s invitation is below.

Please park on Newtonville Rd in the Newtonville Carpool parking lot, just north of hiway 401 (exit 448).

This will be a leisurely 35km route, with options to shorten or lengthen it.

We are suggesting that you bring your own chair, food & drinks, for a short visit afterwards.

This start/finish spot is just a parking lot with no facilities.

Riding from Donegan Park – Tuesday, July 14

Keeping our distance!

Tuesday, July 14th ride route will be a variation of the Twice in Grafton route but starting at 10:00 a.m. at Donegan Park on D’Arcy Street, Cobourg, just south of King.

We will ride south to the Lakeshore Rd, north on Brookside, East on King/Co. Rd. 2 and joining the mapped route heading south on Archer. This route is about 53k but fairly flat with no substantial hills. Shorter routes or longer routes are easily navigated according to the map.

As Donegan Park has lots of parking (alas no washrooms) and shade trees, we are suggesting an after ride, socially distanced bring-your-own chairs, individual picnic. If you haven’t participated in a ‘new normal’ ride with us before, please review the June 29th GFW website post on procedures, print, sign and bring your Covid-19 Waiver. Please also feel confident and comfortable that on the rides we have had since our late start to the season, members have been careful, respectful and have followed the current recommendations.

Friday Rides in General + Details about Friday July 9

From Brian H:

As most of you know I am the Friday Ride Coordinator until at least the end of this month. Although I organized the ride last Friday and will do so again this coming Friday (details below), it would be wonderful if there were volunteer Ride Leaders for the three remaining July Friday rides (July 16th, 23d and 30th).

At least for the month of July we do not expect members to host rides from their homes; rather, it is simply a case of “choose a starting location”, “choose a route” and figure out what, if anything, to do after the ride. Couldn’t be simpler!

Please let me know (bhedney@gmail.com or (text) 905-373-3621) if you are prepared to lead one of these Friday rides.

Details for Friday July 9

This Friday, we will follow the Pretty & Easy route that is listed under Osaca on our Local Cycling Routes. However, we will not be starting the ride in Osaca! My preference is to start at the Sylvan Glen Conservation Area. My only concern is that the parking area there is not that large and that it might be a little crowded with people swimming in the river during this hot spell.

I plan to monitor the situation over the next two or three evenings and I will post an update later in the week. An alternative would be to start from the Port Hope High School, as suggested by the police officer last Friday. So, the route is fixed but be sure to check back on Thursday or Friday for a confirmation of the starting location! In any event, you may wish to bring something along for the apres-ride festivities. I will, of course, bring the “loo tent” 🙂

Riding from Whitby to Pickering – Tuesday, July 7

Pete and Ruth invite you to join them at 10 am for a scenic ride along the Lake Ontario waterfront from Heydenshore Kiwanis Park in Whitby to Captain’s Walk in Pickering. (See map location at the bottom). This mostly flat and rolling route meanders through beautiful parkland, marsh and shoreline, and offers a cool lake breeze on a day that is expected to be sunny and hot!

There and back, the route is 45 kilometres. You can easily shorten it by turning back earlier or lengthen it by continuing past the turning point or end point. Note that the boardwalk just before the Captain’s Walk in Pickering was washed out last year, so you’ll need to carry or walk your bike 200 meters or so along the beach.

Join us after the ride for a bring-your-own picnic. The park where we start has easy access to the beach, and a splash pad for the kids at heart, so also bring your own swim suit and towel, if you think you might enjoy a dip.

The washrooms are not open at the starting point, but there is a Tim’s nearby at Victoria and Gordon as well as a Metro, both of which have washrooms (and food if you don’t pack a lunch!) There are porta potties along the route and public washrooms at the turning point.

If this is your first ride of the season, make sure you’ve signed your COVID 19 Waiver and read the GFW response time COVID 19.

We look forward to enjoying your company (from a safe distance) on a ride that promises to be delightful.

Look for this shade shelter from the parking lot.
Know you’re in the right place!

Riding from King’s Field – Friday, July 3

Join us for our first official ride of the 2020 season, with Brian H. leading us at 5:30 from King’s Field in Port Hope on the Go Fourth route. Though a 48-kilometre route, there are plenty of options to cut out earlier!

Please comment if you plan to ride. If more than 10 ride, we’ll send some of us off in the opposite direction. Remember to print out, sign and bring with you your signed COVID-19 Waiver and read the GFW’s response to COVID-19 in the same document. Execs will be there to collect your paperwork! For those who do not have access to a printer, we will make sure to have plenty on hand. Try to remember to bring your own pen!!!

After the ride, we’ll enjoy a socially-distanced social where Brian plans to bring his beer, his toilet tent and his camping loo. Not sure that he’ll want to share, any of the above, but he invites you to join him and offer up any other suggestions to make this season opener one to remember.

Last Friday, we noticed it got chilly, as we’re close to the lake, so in addition to chairs, your own snacks and beverages, make sure to bring jackets, long pants and a blanket. Heck, Jen P., our resident Girl Guide, was so prepared last week, she even had her mosquito coil with her.

We hope you enjoyed today a lovely Canada Day celebration! Hopefully we’ll see you real soon!

Cycling from Cobourg – Saturday, October 26

Brian and Jacquie are hosting our last weekend ride of the season. Their invitation is below.

Meet at Jacquie & Brian’s house at 2pm. It will be Brian’s Favourite ride of about 50km with possible short cuts.

We have included a short section of quite rideable dirt road between StationRoad & Hwy 2 at Shelter Valley Road, for a change of pace and a return to our touring roots. Route maps will be available.

This will be followed by our traditional potluck supper at around 5pm. Bring your own plates, cutlery & drinks. Don’t forget your LIGHTS, it can get quite dark on a dull day at this time of year. See you Saturday!
