Friday Rides in General + Details about Friday July 9

From Brian H:

As most of you know I am the Friday Ride Coordinator until at least the end of this month. Although I organized the ride last Friday and will do so again this coming Friday (details below), it would be wonderful if there were volunteer Ride Leaders for the three remaining July Friday rides (July 16th, 23d and 30th).

At least for the month of July we do not expect members to host rides from their homes; rather, it is simply a case of “choose a starting location”, “choose a route” and figure out what, if anything, to do after the ride. Couldn’t be simpler!

Please let me know (bhedney@gmail.com or (text) 905-373-3621) if you are prepared to lead one of these Friday rides.

Details for Friday July 9

This Friday, we will follow the Pretty & Easy route that is listed under Osaca on our Local Cycling Routes. However, we will not be starting the ride in Osaca! My preference is to start at the Sylvan Glen Conservation Area. My only concern is that the parking area there is not that large and that it might be a little crowded with people swimming in the river during this hot spell.

I plan to monitor the situation over the next two or three evenings and I will post an update later in the week. An alternative would be to start from the Port Hope High School, as suggested by the police officer last Friday. So, the route is fixed but be sure to check back on Thursday or Friday for a confirmation of the starting location! In any event, you may wish to bring something along for the apres-ride festivities. I will, of course, bring the “loo tent” 🙂

I am afraid our house will not be available for rides for the remainder of this season, just too many risks at our age!

We’ll be there, wherever we start, Brian. Please remember everyone that rides will not be from members’ homes as few people have the room for parking or social distancing nor washrooms facilities before and after rides. There are several parks and all we have to do is come up with a start/finish and route, ensure there will be safe grouping and do a contact tracing count.

Unfortunately this hot weather is laying waste to my enthusiasm for cycling so am not sure when, in the near future, I’ll be re-joining GFW adventures.

I checked out Sylvan Glen at 5:30 PM on Thursday, and there were just two cars parked there. The parking area can accommodate about 10 vehicles. With any luck the situation will be similar on Friday, so that’s where we will start the ride. The only problem was that it was 33 C there at 5:30 PM, and it could be the same tomorrow (with the additional complication of possible thunderstorms!) Unless it is pouring rain, I will be there to “meet and greet” at 5:30 PM. It is going to be hot, and possibly wet, so I will not hold it against you if you decide to give this one a miss😀
BTW – the 1.5 km stretch of the 4th Line between Kellogg and Deer Park is torn up, but it should be rideable as we all have the required skills😀
The route is Pretty+Easy, listed under Osaka. As outlined it is 50 km or 33 km.
Now, wouldn’t it be nice if someone were to volunteer to organize next Friday’s ride 😀 The notion of starting in a local park would appear to be our “new normal” in these Covid times.

Now that we have the three remaining Friday evening rides for July taken care of, it is time to start thinking about August! There are three Fridays that month – August 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. Never too early to consider looking after one of them 🙂
