AGM Date & Photo Contest Deadline

This post invites you to hold the date for our AGM, nominate yourself for one of our upcoming volunteer role vacancies and submit photos for our contest. Read on for details.

Annual General Meeting 2017

Hold the date for this year’s Annual General Meeting.

Date: November 18, 2017
Time: 5:00 pm
Location: Sue’s place outside Orono (see directions and parking details on Calendar)

Sue has organized with her favorite local restaurant to cater the evening, saving us all from the task of preparing a contribution. That said, bring along your $10 contribution to cover the catering costs.

We’ll update you closer to the day with details regarding an outdoor activity before the AGM (likely from 2-5) once we know the weather forecast. And be ready for an exciting game that we’ll play to test your knowledge of our beloved cycling scene.

Volunteers Needed for 2018 Cycling Season!

Turney is stepping down from her Treasurer role. Doug and Sue, our Friday Ride Coordinators are also moving on. Doug is stepping down, while Sue will support Marshall with the Tuesday rides. Thank you, Turney and Doug for your many years of faithful service.

This leaves our club with the Treasurer vacancy on our Executive team and two vacancies for the Friday Ride Coordinator role. The Treasurer deposits membership revenues, pays our expenses, keeps the accounting records and produces our  annual statement. The Ride Coordinators coordinate ride host requests throughout the riding season from April to the end of October. Our volunteers attend a few meetings annually.

Members, if you are interested in stepping into one of these important club roles, please send an email to ganaraskafreewheelers@gmail.com.

2017 Photo Contest

Finally, the deadline for our first annual photo contest is coming up soon! Visit the photo contest summary post for a reminder of photo submission details and get your entries to us by November 7. We’re excited to see your work showcased in our slideshow at the AGM.

Ride Reminder – Tuesday, October 24

Apparently last Tuesday’s ride from Trenton was a keeper route! Thanks to Sue for hosting and to Barry & Lilianne for the map which we need to put on our site!

Richard and Irene are your hosts for this Tuesday’s ride which starts/ends at the Newcastle Golf Course and follows the The Hilly Conclusion. The golf course kitchen will be open for snacks and a beer after the ride.

Comment if you plan to ride!

Ride Reminder – Saturday, October 21

Great day Liz and Bob! You managed to get the rain to clear, made great routes and fed us wonderful soups and apple crisp with ice cream. Good stuff! Thank you.

Franco & Marianne are your hosts for Saturday’s ride starting at 10:00 a.m. from Franco’s place in Cobourg.

Watch for an update to the calendar for address and driving directions. More details about the ride will follow on this post later this week! For now, hold the date and comment if you plan to join us.

There will be a a couple of rides 34 and 50km that start flat along highway 2 then go north where there are hills. People could also make a shorter flatter route out and back along 2 if they want.

Pot luck to follow, so bring on your stuff!

Ride Reminder – Tuesday, October 17

Join your host Sue for a ride from Trenton. Here is her invitation to you:

Parking is at the small conservation area on the east side of the Trent River called the Glen Miller Conservation Area, just south of Johnstown Road by the bridge.  You can take Glen Miller Road off the 401 and head north.  The CA is on your left just before the bridge.  There is also a big church parking lot on the west side of the river at Johnstown Road near the bridge if the CA area is full.

We will have lunch at the Riverbrake Café, 11 Front Street, Trenton K8V 4N3.  Yes, they are licensed.  I will have the maps to hand out – thanks to Barry and Lilianne for this route as it is one of theirs from years ago.

Please comment if you plan to join the ride.

Ride Calendar Update

Good job GF members! You’ve claimed all the open ride dates in October.

Looks like last Tuesday’s ride had a small but enthusiastic turnout! Said one ride groupie in the Comments: Grrrrrrrrreat ride yesterday. Brian H, Jennifer, John, me and Richard. We started out without Richard but met him after he scaled the scaffolding at the lighthouse and was resting from the ordeal. Brian added some dipsy-doodles to the route out from Colborne that were wonderful. Mid October and still in shorts and sunshine. Life is good! Thank you Brian.

Ride Reminder – Saturday, October 14

This weekend was a busy one for the Freewheelers, beginning with a small group assembling for Thanksgiving at Katherine’s where the stuffed turkey had competition from Barb’s rice crispy square (round?) turkey. Apparently the riding was glorious and those with an appetite for food and laughter came away well fed!

The next day, the first annual Ganaraska Freewheelers cycle-cross at Harold’s attracted 10 hearty riders who braved the 1.1 kilometre circuit, many times over. How many times, you ask? You’ll need to check the official register.

Moving on to this coming weekend, you’re all invited to Liz & Bob’s for Saturday’s ride. Here’s the scoop:

Please join Bob and Liz for a ride from their home just west of Blackstock (see address on calendar and in Member Directory). The ride starts at 10:00. There will be a short ride (about 35 kilometers) and a longer ride (49 kilometers). Maps/directions will be provided.
Liz welcomes everyone to stay for a lunch of her homemade chicken/squash soup and apple crisp. Come to the west side and enjoy.
Please use the comments to let your hosts know if you plan to join the ride and apres-feast. Colours should be splendid.
Thanks to Harold for putting this photo collage together of our first (annual?) cycle cross event!

Ride Reminder – Tuesday, October 10

Good news folks! Not only was last Tuesday’s ride a hit (according to Barb: Good ride. Beautiful day and great put-together routes), we have a host for tomorrow’s ride.
Brian H. is back in town! Here is his invitation:

It would appear that we are going to be hit with the remnants of Hurricane Nate on Monday but it should then clear nicely for the ride on Tuesday.

Unless anyone has a better plan, how about the 50 km (or less) Lakes, Big and Small ride from the Keeler Centre in Colborne? Barb and John attempted to do this one in the spring – we all met, but then headed back home with our bikes still in /on our vehicles when the rain came! This is a good route as it starts out flat before heading north in to the hills (or not!).
Re: dining suggestions, there are a couple options that riders can discuss at the beginning of the ride the Red Rooster (or is it the Golden Rooster) and Vitos in Colborne.
Please comment if you plan to ride. And let us know via the comments afterwards how the ride went!

Upcoming Ride Reminders – Need Hosts!

There is no host for the Tuesday, October 3 ride, therefore the ride will start from the Port Hope Town Hall at 10:00. Riders can comment on this post if they plan to ride and suggest a route.

Actually, there are no ride hosts in the calendar for October at all yet, so I’m sure Marshall will welcome your offers to host! Check the calendar for the dates and Marshall’s contact details.

Regarding Friday rides, there are two remaining dates on the calendar without hosts – the 21st and the 28th. Please be reminded we move to Saturday rides in October, with the exception of our annual Thanksgiving ride from Katherine’s. We’ve added a special treat this year – a cycle cross ride at Harold D’s to take place Thanksgiving weekend on the Saturday. You’ll receive separate posts for each of these rides to make sure you are able to comment separately if you plan to attend.

Ride Reminder – Friday, July 28

GFW pie

Friday’s ride will commence at 5:30 from Bess’ country estate in Osaca. A pot-luck will follow the ride.

Brian H. is the Ride Leader. The route will be “Bess’ Ride, listed under Osaca. There are two “official” distances listed – 56 km and 30 km, although other variations are possible. The longer route include a visit to Beautiful Bewdley and takes in a few delightful hills to get there. The shorter route is also much flatter!

Don’t forget your utensils, plates and beverages. See you there!

Ride Reminder – July 25

Third time’s a charm? Here is the invitation from Jacquie & Brian, your hosts:

Brian & Jacquie

The ride on Tuesday, July 25, will start at our home, at 10am and will follow my favourite route which takes you East and UP Shelter Valley Road and King Road. A relaxed ride with time to look around and no high speed lineouts (!!). Maps will be available. Following this there will be complementary burgers on the deck. Contributions of salad or dessert will be appreciated. Bring your usual personal effects.

See you here.

Jacquie and Brian

If you’d like to download your own map, you can now find it on our Local Routes – first one under Cobourg.
